Backgammon may be a game played between two people, but there is much more to
the game when multiple players compete against each other in tournament
play.
Much like Poker tournaments, Backgammon Tournaments are the staple food of
the online backgammon player diet. Head-to-Head play is fun, and a great way to
improve your skills, but Tournament play is the place to bring home
big money as a tournament champion. In fact, you usually don't even
have to win a tournament to win money. In most cases players in the
final rounds recevie a substancial portion of the tournament prize pool.
Like Poker, Backgammon has professional organizations and profession tournaments
throughout the year. The most popular tournaments are help in Europe and Asia, but online
tournaments are quicky taking the place of offline tournament play.
There are two types of tournaments available to Backgammon players; Sit-n-Go
tournaments and Event Tournaments. As the name implies, a Sit-n-Go Tournament
can start at any time that a group of players wants to start, provided there are
enough players to create the tournament. Event Tournaments are scheduled in advance,
and generally have a much larger player base. Event Tournaments may have several rounds
of play, and can be paid or free buy-in. It is not uncommon to see very large
guaranteed winner pools in Event Tournaments.
There are essentially two ways to enter a tournament; free and paid entry.
Free tournaments, known as a freeroll, are almost exclusively available online.
Freerolls are generally available on a daily or weekly basis at almost all
online backgammon servers. The huge advantage of a freeroll tournament
is that it is free to enter, so any winnings are at no cost you to.
Paid entry tournaments are a whole different scenario. Since you are putting
up your own stake to enter the tournament, the level of play is generally much
better than that of a freeroll. As a result, the winnings pool tends to be a
bigger, and the competition is smaller, but more skilled. The advantage of a paid tournament
is that you must win fewer rounds (games) to achieve a winning payout.
In any case, tournament play is the best way to have an interactive experience
playing Backgammon. You can challenge anyone from anywhere around
the world to play a game. The best part is that you don't even need to speak the
same language to play and communicate with a new friend!
